YEAR 3: Education
My first project of third year was based around Education, and creating a flexible multi-space educational 'hub', that will help to improve and incentivise positive learning, and is responsive to change and development.
The three spaces designed in the scheme were a reception, canteen and formal learning space. Paying attention to detail to the needs of the students, the canteen and the learning space were designed to have contrasting uses, in which socialising and relaxing can be carried out in one space, and focused learning becomes a separate activity. The segregation between the two creates a healthy, positive balance.
Taking inspiration from a design based discipline that the space would be used by, the concept of craftsmanship, and crafting a positive learning environment, drove the design. Detailing such as the timber beam ceiling feature, angled to direct people towards the reception, is one example where detailing has been considered.
