YEAR 2: Steamworks - Laundrette and Cafe (Project 1).
My first project of the DE5001 module was based around designing a laudrette and seating area extension in the basement of an existing cafe. The cafe is located in the heart of Newcastle's city centre, and provided a live site, with live clients to work with. This allowed me to gain valuable experience working with clients to design a space that would adhere to their personal taste.
My design was chosen by my tutors as the scheme that was to be presented to the clients, giving me further experience with live presentation skills.
The concept for this design is based around the Industrial Revolution, which introduces the main design element as the Steampunk genre. The design also focuses on, and celebrates, the history of the washing machine.
Since there was not much room to work with, I ensured that fine details were considered. A pipe-work wall, ceiling and lighting feature, and other areas of exposed pipe became a large part of the design because it linked not only to Steam Punk, but also to the flow of water involved in the washing process.
